Today marks a historic moment for cheerleading as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has granted full recognition to the International Cheer Union (ICU) during its 138th IOC Session in Tokyo, Japan. This landmark decision elevates the status of cheerleading globally, setting the stage for its potential inclusion in future Olympic Games.
The ICU, headquartered in the United States, has been the authoritative body for cheerleading since 2009, organizing the ICU World Championship and Continental Championships. With this recognition, the ICU can now actively petition for cheerleading to be featured in the Olympic Games.
“This is a monumental day for cheerleaders worldwide,” stated Bill Seely, President of Varsity Spirit. “We’re incredibly proud to have contributed to the development of cheerleading into the dynamic sport it is today. IOC recognition opens doors for greater development, support, and funding, which is a significant victory for cheer.”
Seely also expressed gratitude to Jeff Webb, President of the ICU, and Karl Olson, Secretary General of the ICU, acknowledging their tireless efforts and dedication in making this achievement possible. Without their leadership, today’s milestone would not have been realized.
