If you’re hoping for a Bring It On sequel, we might just be in luck.
Gabrielle Union recently hinted at the possibility of a Bring It On sequel featuring her and Kirsten Dunst.
Union and Dunst first lit up the screen in the 2000 comedy classic as rival cheerleading captains. Torrance, played by Dunst, discovers her San Diego squad has been pilfering routines from Isis’s East Compton team, portrayed by Union. This revelation sparks a fierce rivalry that eventually evolves into mutual respect and friendship. While the original film spawned several sequels, none starred the iconic duo of Union and Dunst. The film is now considered a cult classic.
Despite initial skepticism from executives, Bring It On became a hit upon its release on August 25, 2000, grossing $90 million at the box office. Its legacy extended well beyond the original film, inspiring five direct-to-DVD sequels and a Broadway musical featuring songs by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Recently, both actors found themselves at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in March. Union, an executive producer for the Anne Hathaway-led rom-com The Idea of You, and Dunst, starring in Alex Garland’s Civil War, were busy promoting their respective projects.
During a red carpet interview for The Idea of You, Union was asked if she and Dunst had reconnected and whether a sequel was in the works. Union’s response was tantalizingly vague but hopeful: “Who knows? We may have something cooking, you know?”
Union confirms that she’s been in discussions about a sequel, while hinting at the unpredictable nature of getting a film greenlit.
Director Peyton Reed, who helmed the original Bring It On, expressed interest in a sequel back in 2020. He mentioned conversations with screenwriter Jessica Bendinger about a generational cheerleader movie, saying, “Particularly with the thematics involved, I think that could be something really timely.”
Kirsten Dunst also recently shared her thoughts on revisiting the franchise. At a Los Angeles screening of Civil War, Dunst told Entertainment Tonight, “I mean, it depends. Everyone’s bringing back their stuff, right?” She added one condition: “As long as it’s not embarrassing.”
For fans of Bring It On, this news is as thrilling as a perfectly executed basket toss. While nothing is confirmed, the possibility of seeing Union and Dunst back on the mat is enough to keep cheer enthusiasts hopeful.
