Exciting changes are underway at James Madison University! Director of Athletics Matt Roan announced the appointment of Ryan Andrews as the new head coach for the cheerleading program and spirit squads.
“Ryan brings two decades of competitive cheer and spirit group experience to JMU,” Roan stated. “With a rich background as a collegiate coach at Florida and various consulting roles, Ryan is poised to enhance our game day experience and foster the best home environment in college football and basketball. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the JMU family!”
Ryan Andrews shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I am incredibly grateful and fortunate to join the JMU family. From day one, everyone has been so welcoming, making my transition from Florida smooth and refreshing. JMU already feels like home. I’m eager to collaborate with our staff, student-athletes, and community to bring unparalleled positivity, enthusiasm, and school spirit to James Madison University. Game on and go Dukes!”
Andrews initially joined JMU as an assistant coach in the spring and quickly ascended to the head coach position. His responsibilities now encompass all aspects of the cheer and spirit programs, including game day cheer, competitive cheer, and the Duke Dog mascot program.
Before his tenure at JMU, Andrews built an impressive career in the cheer community. Based in Florida, he spent over 20 years coaching athletes at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels through clinics, consultations, training sessions, and workshops. He has also led coaching clinics and supported aspiring collegiate cheer athletes in their recruitment journeys.
Andrews’ experience includes five years as a spirit program assistant at the University of Florida, where he managed game day activities, practices, community appearances, academic advising, marketing, and fan engagement. Most recently, he served as the general manager for SPARC Athletics in St. Augustine, Fla., focusing on skill refinement and team unity for over 400 middle school athletes. Additionally, he has experience in human resources and recruiting with TRC Staffing Services in Jacksonville.
