The University of West Georgia’s (UWG) cheerleading program is taking a significant step forward as Head Cheerleading Coach Nicole Nichols transitions to a full-time coaching position. This change aligns with UWG’s elevation to Division I and its plans to integrate STUNT as an official sport in the 2025-26 season.
Director of Athletics Jason Carmichael announced Nichols’ new role, emphasizing its importance for the university’s athletic success. “Bringing Coach Nichols more fully into the family and giving her a new platform to magnify her leadership excellence is a home run in terms of talent retention,” Carmichael stated. “Nicole is an industry leader in her space, and we are thrilled to take this next step with her.”
Nicole Nichols has achieved notable success at UWG, leading the Wolves cheerleading program to 15 team titles at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Nationals and multiple Partner Stunt Championships at both the UCA and National Cheer Association (NCA) levels. Nichols’ leadership has also seen UWG student-athletes represent Team USA at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Championships for the past four years.
In her new full-time role, Nichols will oversee the cheer program and lead the development of the STUNT program, a growing sport in collegiate athletics. “This opportunity represents a thrilling new chapter in my coaching career and for the cheer program,” Nichols expressed. “I am eager to continue to collaborate with our dedicated athletes and staff to cultivate a culture of excellence both on and off the mat, aiming for achievements that make our university, community, and alumni proud.”
STUNT is set to officially become a sport at UWG in the 2025-26 academic year. Nichols is optimistic about this new venture. “This opportunity will allow me the time needed to truly be all in for our program, staff, and community,” she added. “I am also excited to dive into a new part of the cheer world and bring STUNT here to UWG.”
With Nichols’ leadership, the future of UWG’s cheerleading and STUNT programs looks promising, with potential for continued success and new achievements on both national and international stages.
