Daytona Beach, FL – On April 13, 2024, the Xavier University of Louisiana Competitive Cheer Team (XULA Cheer) etched their name in the history books once again. In a stunning display of athleticism and spirit, XULA Cheer clinched the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) National Championship in the Advanced Large Coed NAIA Division. With a score of 91.3375, they edged out Westcliff University, securing their second national title and further solidifying their place in cheerleading history.
A Monumental Achievement
This victory is monumental for several reasons. Not only does it mark XULA Cheer’s second national title, following their groundbreaking win in 2022, but it also makes them the first HBCU to achieve such honors in advanced categories. Head Coach Glenn Caston couldn’t be prouder of his team. “What a wonderful way to end our season,” Caston remarked. “The resilience and determination that this team has shown is unmatched.”
A Program on the Rise
In just five seasons, XULA Cheer has evolved from a club sport to a nationally recognized powerhouse. Senior and Team Captain Kaitlyn Banks reflected on the program’s rapid growth and her personal journey. “It feels amazing to be a National Champion again. This was the greatest victory I could ever ask for to conclude my 4-year cheer career at Xavier. I have seen this program grow and expand as I had never imagined, and it feels great to know that I am a part of a family and team that believes in you and can dream big for you.”
Coach Caston’s dedication to balancing academic excellence with athletic prowess has been a cornerstone of the program’s success. Many of XULA’s cheerleaders are pursuing rigorous academic programs, studying to become future doctors, dentists, scientists, business owners, and researchers. “The staff’s dedication at the season’s start ensures our student-athletes are fully equipped for the rigorous coursework in the classroom and championship-level training demands on the mat,” Caston added.
The Impact of Their Win
The significance of XULA Cheer’s triumph extends beyond the mat. Actress Gabrielle Union, star of the iconic cheer movie “Bring It On,” dubbed them the “real-life Clovers,” emphasizing the importance of their victory in the competitive cheer world. This national recognition not only highlights the talent and dedication of HBCU student-athletes but also underscores Xavier University’s commitment to preparing its students for leadership roles in their communities and the world.
Looking Ahead
With their impressive win, XULA Cheer has set a new standard for what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Their story is one of inspiration, proving that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. As Coach Caston looks to the future, he remains confident that this victory will motivate all future XULA cheerleaders to strive for greatness.
Congratulations to XULA Cheer for their historic win and for showing us all how it’s done! 🎉💛🐯
