Miranda Lambert’s childhood was anything but ordinary, growing up in a household where her parents, both private investigators, ran their own firm. This unconventional upbringing led the country music star into some unique and surprising situations, including one where she had to go undercover—using her cheerleading uniform as a disguise.
In a recent episode of Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, Lambert shared a memorable story from her teenage years. During high school, while most of her peers were focused on typical teenage activities, Lambert was helping her parents with their private investigation business. One particular assignment had her donning her cheerleading uniform to gain access to a suspect’s house under the guise of selling cookies for the squad.
Recalling the experience, Lambert says, “I was in high school, and I was a cheerleader. My mom took me on a job where I had to put my cheerleading uniform on and pretend to sell cookies for the cheerleading squad.” She adds with a laugh, “She told me, ‘When you get in their house, ask to use their bathroom while they’re getting their money out, and when you get in there, see if there’s any liquor.’ They weren’t supposed to be drinking.”
For 15-year-old Lambert, it was a surreal moment. “I should be at cheer practice right now,” she remembers thinking, laughing at the absurdity of the situation.
The Lambert family’s private investigation firm, Lambert & Lambert, often involved cases that touched on serious issues like divorce and child custody, which Lambert later revealed were a significant influence on her songwriting. “They mostly did divorce and child custody cases,” she shared, “which is where I think I got a lot of my early songs.”
Throughout the podcast, Lambert also opens up about other aspects of her life, including stories from her childhood, her new album Postcards From Texas, and her relationship with husband Brendan McLoughlin.
From undercover cheerleader to country music superstar, Lambert’s story is one of grit, creativity, and the unexpected ways life experiences can shape an artist.
