As we begin STUNT’s 14th season, we celebrate another milestone accomplishment! On January 13th at the 2024 NCAA Convention in Phoenix, AZ, the Division III membership elevated STUNT to NCAA emerging sport status. With the previous passage by Divisions I and II, STUNT is now an emerging sport across all divisions of the NCAA.
“This monumental vote brings all of the NCAA divisions together and is historic for all of our STUNT programs,” said Lauri Harris, Executive Director of USA Cheer. “We couldn’t have done this without the amazing support from administrators, coaches, athletes, officials, the NCAA, and fans of STUNT.“
Today’s actions further expand opportunities for female student-athletes at the collegiate level, highlighting the ongoing impact of Title IX. The elevation of STUNT to emerging sport status underscores the sport’s growing recognition and the dedicated efforts of the entire STUNT community. “We are excited about moving forward with our next goal of championship sport status!” Harris added.
Currently, 62 colleges and universities offer STUNT as part of their athletic programs, and the excitement surrounding its growth is palpable. The sport’s reach continues to expand, opening doors for more female athletes to showcase their skills and compete at higher levels.
STUNT was created to meet the interests and abilities of young women with the skillset of cheer. It provides a platform for athletes of all ages, from youth to high school to college, to engage in a structured and competitive environment. With its recent recognition across all NCAA divisions, these athletes now have the unique opportunity to be part of a collegiate sport that celebrates their talents and dedication.
In addition to STUNT’s recognition, the NCAA Division III membership ratified a new philosophy statement during the 2024 NCAA Convention. This statement emphasizes the importance of a well-rounded student-athlete experience, prioritizing academics, athletics, and community involvement. This alignment with Division III’s values further strengthens STUNT’s position within the NCAA framework, ensuring that athletes receive holistic support throughout their college careers.
As STUNT continues to grow, it brings with it the promise of more opportunities, more competition, and more recognition for female athletes nationwide. The sport’s evolution is a testament to the hard work and passion of everyone involved, from the grassroots level to the collegiate stage.
